Australian Geographic (AG) recently featured “Ten of the best Australian mountains to climb”. The list includes mountains with spectacular vistas that are worthy to be added to your mountains-to-climb list. Some of these mountains may not be the highest in the world but they offer superb perspectives over our World Heritage-listed sites and other exquisite natural landscapes, reported AG. The mountains that made it to the list are:
1. Wollumbin-Mt Warning, NSW 2. Mt Gower, NSW 3. Mt Kosciuszko, NSW 4. Mt Feathertop, Vic 5. Mt Barney, Qld 6. Walshs Pyramid, Qld 7. Mt Ngungun, Qld 8. Cradle Mountain, Tas 9. Bishop and Clerk, Tas 10. St Mary Peak, SA
Australians, fond of the outdoors and bushwalking, are ready to take on this adventure through to the summit of these mountains. They don’t back out of mountain climbing challenges, even if the endeavour is climbing to the peak of Mt Everest ? an achievement for Tim Macartney-Snape and Greg Mortimer, the first Australians who successfully reached the summit of the world’s highest peak in 1984. Together with them in this Australian Everest Expedition was mountaineer Lincoln Hall, who was short of a few hundred metres to the top in this first attempt but went back to finally reach Mt Everest’s summit in 2006. This successful 2006 climb, however, became famous because of his survival story: he lost consciousness on his way down, disoriented and without food and oxygen, at an altitude of above 8000m. This AG Lifetime of Adventure Award recipient, founding director of Australian Himalayan Foundation, and writer-author cheated death on the sub-freezing Everest peak but didn’t survive his battle with mesothelioma. He passed away on March 20th.
